U.S. MILITARY RIFLES
U.S.A. Second Model Remington Rolling Block split-breech carbine (56-.50 Spencer caliber) mfg. by Savage Repeating Arms Company in 1865. This is a very rare U.S. military carbine that was authorized in October 1864, but arrived too late to be issued during the U.S. Civil War (1000 were delivered in September 1865, the remaining 14,000 in March 1866). Remington then bought back nearly all 15,000 that had been produced, and in 1870 resold them to France (at a respectable profit) to see service in the Franco-Prussian War and very few made it back to the U.S.A (they are rare in France as well, however, due to German confiscations during both WWI and WWII). This carbine has seen quite a bit of use with the external metal (which was not blued, but finished "in the white") having mottled surfaces (but no rust). The bore has very pronounced rifling but isn't very bright, and the action is completely functional. The stock is surprisingly sound with very BOLD U.S. military cartouches on the left side of the butt. The buttplate is stamped US and just above that is a copper plate stamped 129 (likely a rack number). Very rare, not import-marked PHOTOS . . . $2400. Antique, no FFL required
U.S.A. Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield rifle # 320023 (.45-70) mfg. by Springfield Arsenal in 1885 with VERY bold 1885 dated cartouche. Near Excellent condition with most external bluing remaining (breech block has faint case colors). Bore is literally MIRROR bright and very strong. Sound walnut stock has boxed SWP 1885 cartouche on left side and some insignificant scratches at bottom of grip. Includes the elusive front sight hood. A really attractive example in superb condition for its (134 year-old) age. Not import-marked PHOTOS . . . $1250. Antique, no FFL required SOLD
U.S.A. Model 1884 Trapdoor Springfield rifle # 458903 (.45-70) mfg. by Springfield Arsenal in 1889 with bold 1889 dated cartouche. Near Excellent condition with most external bluing remaining (breech block has faint case colors). Bore is extremely bright and very strong. U.S.A. Model 1889 RAMROD-BAYONET Springfield trapdoor rifle # 508634 (.45-70) mfg. by Springfield Arsenal in 1891. Would be in Excellent condition if it had not been apparently hung above a fireplace for the last Century or so. External metal is covered in rust and the bore did not fare much better. Walnut stock has a bold boxed SWP 1890 cartouche on left side. Some dings and scratches in the wood from handling. This rifle is surprisingly functional and ready to be shot again (or hung over another fireplace). Not import-marked. PHOTOS . . . $450. Antique, no FFL required SOLD
U.S.A. Model 1889 Springfield trapdoor carbine (cut-down rifle) # 522499 (.45-70) mfg. by Springfield Arsenal in 1891. Should be a rifle with ramrod-bayonet (like the one above) in Very Good condition with a mostly bright and very strong bore. Barrel has been shortened to carbine length, with front sight professionally braised on and buttstock has had its ramrod channel nicely filled in with wood. The stock also has the correct carbine sling swivel bar on the left side with saddle-ring attached. Some dings and scratches in the wood from handling. Of course, it retains the 1889 rifle rear sight. Completely functional and ready to ruin your shoulder if fired. From a short distance it appears to be a pretty good substitute for one of the earlier Trapdoor carbine without spending several (or many) thousands of dollars. Not import-marked. PHOTOS . . . $750. Antique, no FFL required SOLD
