RIFLES

ENGLAND  Lee Enfield .22 single-shot trainer #L74402 (.22LR) originally manufactured by  London Small Arms, Co. Ltd. in 1914.   Very Good plus condition, with a very sharp mirror-bore.   A very interesting rifle with somewhat of a chequered past.  Starting out it's "life" as a SMLE Mk.III rifle, it still retains its magazine cut-off slot on the right side of the receiver.  It was then (circa 1918) decided to convert this rifle to .22LR by means of the "Pattern 14" method, drilling-out and sleeving an off-center .22LR bore, the chambering being the same .303-size and the actual .22LR cartridge being inserted into a .303 "dummy round" to be loaded from the magazine, fired, and ejected as usual.   At that time to the right side of the receiver (specifically the butt-socket) was added the stamped legend "A.G. PARKER & Co., Ltd. / Birmingham / .22 Patt '14".   Well, it doesn't take a dummy to realize that this is not the optimal rechambering system as regular .303 rounds could also be loaded, chambered, and fired with predictable disastrous consequences, and the "Pattern 14" project was soon scrapped while they were ahead and it was declared a "Drill Purpose" gun, with DP stamped atop the chamber.   This rifle was then once-again reconverted (likely by Australia sometime in the early 1950's)  to the No.2 (old SMLE Mk.IV*) single-shot configuration, with a new dedicated, non-sleeved B.S.A. .22LR barrel (bearing the rifle-tripod trademark of Birmingham Small Arms on its Knox-form), refitted with a specialized No.2 bolt-head,  and the DP stamp on the top of the chamber was struck-through several times. This is indicated by the No.2 designation stamped below all the other markings on the right side of the receiver butt-socket and the fact that all wood on this rifle is of Slazenger manufacture and dated in the early 1950's.  None of the numbers on any of the parts match, but that is to be expected from such an extensively-reworked rifle.  Magazine is empty and serves only as a repository of expended .22 casings so as to not litter the range (the back of the magazine has numerous numbers stamped and struck-through as well).  A very interesting specimen, still quite sound and attractive and perfect for a collector of single-shot rifles showing a clear chronology.  To add to interest, this rifle is also Canadian Army property-marked (broad-arrow inside large C) on both the left side of the receiver and left side of butt-socket. Wood has usual handling-marks from storage, one heavy ding on front handguard.  Not import-markedPHOTOS . . . $350    C&R     SOLD

FINN Model 39 Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle #240735 (7.62x54R), barrel mfg. by SAKO in 1942, receiver mfg. by Remington in 1915-17.   Excellent condition, 98% bluing (some blued-over slight pitting on receiver, magazine-floorplate thinned from carry).  Matching bolt, with cleaning-rod, bore is as-new and perfect.  Postwar square-jointed stock has a couple circular plugs on top by buttplate and very few handling-marks. . . $225.   C&R

FINN Model 39 "postwar" Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle #303745 (7.62x54R), barrel mfg. by SAKO in 1969, receiver mfg. and date uncertain. Excellent-plus condition, 100% bluing, matching bolt, with cleaning-rod, bore is as-new and perfect.  Stock has one circular plug on right side and a couple small contact-marks but is otherwise as-new and has really pretty swirling figure in the grain.  1969 is by far the rarest of the postwar regular production M39's. . . $325.   C&R   SOLD

FINN Model P-08 Luger loading-tool.  Gray-parkerized with SA in square stamp, appear to be new.  PHOTO . . . $12.

GERMANY Model Gewher 98 Mauser bolt-action rifle #3619 (8x57) mfg. by D.W.M. in 1908.   Very good, most bluing there but fading and turning plum.  Almost as-new mirror-bore, extremely strong and mirror-bright.  This rifle is a Turkish re-work and thus no parts are matching, Turk crescent stamped atop bolt-knob (bolt mfg. by CZ) but not on receiver.  Lange "roller-coaster" rear-sight intact and working perfectly. Nice-looking Walnut buttstock with partial tigerstripe figure has been lightly sanded but Weimar cartouches are still visible (if not clear) and there are hardly and handling-marks.  I'm sure the barrel is a Turkish replacement as it is far too nice to be original, overall a very attractive pre-WWI Weimar rifle with strong proofs and markings. . . $275.   C&R    ON HOLD

HUNGARY Model 1895 Steyr-Mannlicher straight-pull carbine #4131 (8x56R), mfg. at Budapest in c.1915   Excellent arsenal-refinished condition with 100% bluing.  Bore is strong and bright (a little frost in the grooves), with matching barrel, receiver, bolt and stock. BUDAPEST stamped atop chamber. Gorgeous streaked Walnut buttstock with lighter Beech handguard, both with only a couple small handling-marks and nice finish (sling-swivel slot at bottom of buttstock filled-in with tigerstripe lighter wood). . . $120.   C&R   SOLD

NORWAY Model 1912/16 Krag-Jorgenson bolt-action carbine #5825 (6.5x55) mfg. by Kronsburg Vapenfabrikk in 1915. Near Excellent, with 80% original bluing, all-matching numbers, cleaning-rod present, strong markings, and a really gorgeous bright-bore.  Unfortunately the wood has been refinished and modified by its last owner, who successfully used it to hunt deer for the last 30 years in Arizona.  He did NOT cut the stock or shorten it at all (thank God), but he did shape the back part of the buttstock into a Monte-Carlo profile with a commercial buttpad, and added a Lyman-type peep-sight at the rear of the receiver (which entailed adding some metal for height to the front-sight). Original rear-sight remains, and this rifle is in restorable back to stock condition aside for the two small screws in the right side-rail holding the Lyman-type sight on.  Wood has been nicely refinished with very high-gloss tung-oil and has hardly a scratch on it since.  These are very rare carbines, with only a few thousand having been made.   PHOTOS . . . $350.   C&R   SOLD

ORANGE FREE STATE (South Africa) Model 1893 Mauser bolt-action rifle #8589 (7x57) mfg. by D.W.M. in early 1897.   Excellent, 95% original bluing and all-matching numbers (including cleaning-rod) except for turned-down bolt (which is from the second O.V.S. contract numbered in the C-block and of the correct flat-bottomed type for this gun).  Almost as-new mirror-bore, extremely strong and mirror-bright.  This rifle also has a very bold Chilean crest above chamber, O.V.S. over horizontal line above serial number on left side of receiver, and early siderail legend not mentioning Chile at all (usual legend for Chilean 1895's: "Modelo Chileno 1895").  Wood has been sanded and nicely refinished with high-gloss tung-oil, but cartouches and serial # clear and grain is really pretty.  Very rare, less than 10,000 manufactured and quite historic.   PHOTOS . . . $425.   Antique, no FFL required    SOLD

PERSIA (now IRAN) Model 98/29 Mauser bolt-action long- rifle #C04688 (8x57mm) mfg. at Brno in 1931.   Excellent, with 98% bluing, mirror-perfect bore, and all-matching numbers. Persian crest is extremely bold and beautiful.  Nice streaked light walnut furniture. some dings and scrapes from being palletized during storage for the last 69 years.  Some small dings on right side of crest. . . $275.   C&R

RUSSIA Model SVT-40 10-round magazines. Original unissued Russian Tokarev mags with full bluing and no numbers stamped or engraved on them, still in the arsenal grease.  We were fortunate enough to acquire a small very number of these, but they will go quickly and I know of no other source. . . $150.    A few used ones with stamped numbers and light rust and/or grind-marks on them also available @ $120.
